Farin Dutse, Kaduna – October 28, 2025 – A peaceful community in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State was thrown into mourning on Tuesday after armed bandits attacked worshippers, killing a pastor and abducting more than 20 people. Reverend Yahaya Kambasiya, pastor of the local United Church of Christ in Nigeria (HEKAN), was shot dead in a horrifying morning raid that left residents terrified. Witnesses said gunmen opened fire early in the day, causing congregants to flee into nearby farms and bush. When the gunfire subsided, Pastor Kambasiya, attempting to check on his members, was shot in the chest and died instantly.

HEKAN officials described the attack as “callous, inhumane and wicked” and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue those abducted and protect vulnerable communities. The church noted that the loss of the pastor and the abduction of worshippers is a devastating blow to families and the wider community. Many residents are now afraid to attend church or carry out daily activities, including farming, for fear of further attacks.

The attack in Farin Dutse is not an isolated incident. Last December, the same area suffered a similar raid that resulted in the abduction of dozens of villagers, including a pastor. Banditry has been a growing threat across Southern and Central Kaduna, with attacks on rural communities, churches, and farms becoming increasingly frequent. Residents continue to live under the constant threat of violence, and the trauma from such attacks disrupts livelihoods and social cohesion.

Local leaders and church officials have appealed to security agencies to carry out urgent search and rescue operations for the abducted worshippers, while also strengthening security patrols and early warning measures in vulnerable areas. Families of the victims have called for counselling and support to help cope with the trauma of the attack. Meanwhile, the body of the late Pastor Kambasiya has been deposited at a morgue, with burial arrangements being coordinated with his family.

Concerned citizens are urged to follow verified updates from authorities, support local relief efforts assisting affected families, and participate in community safety initiatives to help prevent further attacks.

The tragic incident underscores the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria’s north-central region and the urgent need for effective protection for rural communities.
